Welcome to EYFS - Reception

Morning Routine

8.30am – Teachers will open class doors. Children will be welcomed by one of the reception team.

8.45am – The school day begins and the register will be taken.

8.50am – playground gates will be locked if you arrive after this please report to the School Office.

Break time snacks – The Government supplies fruit for all children in Foundation Stage, which we have after morning break. Your child is welcome to bring in their own piece of fruit for snack if the wish.

Please note we are a NUT FREE school due to both child/staff allergies.

End of School Routine

3.15pm  – class ends.

Class teachers will dismiss children once we see their parent in the playground.  Please bear with us while we get to know you all.

If someone other than a parent is to collect your child please advise the class teacher in the morning. If the reception team aren’t familiar with a new person picking up then we will arrange a password with you in the morning.

Children will not be handed over unless we have your authority.

If you need to speak with the class teacher about your child’s day or any misplaced items, please wait until all children have been dismissed and we will do our best to help you.

Clothing

Please could we ask you to label all of your child’s clothing clearly to help them locate them, this will need to include juice bottles and lunch boxes.

Misplaced items, which are not labelled, will be placed in the lost property. If your child misplaced an item please ask a member of the Reception team and they will look for it once other children are dismissed.

PE

The children in Reception do not currently get changed for PE in school.

Your child is welcome to wear PE kit to school on our PE days (these are currently Monday and Thursday).

Outdoor Learning

We are very fortunate in Reception to have access to our willow area every day. We ask that your child brings in clearly labelled wellies in on a Monday which can then be taken home on a Friday. Please put labelled wellies in a carrier bag so we can store them on their pegs.

Tapestry online Learning journeys

In Reception we learn mostly through play, building up our phonics and maths steadily.

As part of our learning, we aim to involve you as parents/carers as much as we can.

The Welcome Pack, you will have received, included information about the Tapestry system we use.

Tapestry will enable you to record observations of your child’s learning at home.

If you have not already done so, please could you return your permission form for Tapestry access.

We are in the process of collating permissions and will contact you in the next few weeks with information on how to access your account.

Please keep us up to date with your child's achievements at home by adding your own observations.

Reading books

After the first few weeks of settling in your child will then be sent home with a reading book. The book your child brings home will reflect the current stage of phonics they are at in class.

New books will come home with your child on a Monday, these need to be handed back in by Friday so we can change them for the next week.

You will have a reading record, please record when your child has read at home and comment on any progress they have made.

Once your child has read five times at home they will receive a reading certificate in class on a Friday.

We will only issue a new reading book once the old one has been returned.

Phonics support

In Reception we work on the same phonics scheme as rest of the school, Read Write Inc. The children begin the year learning phonics as a whole class. After a few weeks the children are assessed then put into groups depending on their current phonic knowledge. The children are regularly assessed to ensure the phonic teaching they are receiving links to their current knowledge.

The links below will provide you with an introduction to phonics and the Read Write Inc scheme.

School dinners

All children in Reception are eligible to receive free school dinners under the Government’s Universal Free School Meals.

The dinner menu remains the same as the summer term until half term, a copy can be found on the front of the website.

Reception teachers will ask your child which option they would like for dinner at the beginning of the day. If you would like your child to have a specific dish please let a member of the Reception team know in the  morning.

Weekly communications with parents

Notices specific to Reception will be posted on to Tapestry. You are also able to post your own observations for us to see on to Tapestry as well. Please note if you post anything as an observation then this will only be seen by yourself and staff members.

A weekly phonic spotlight will be posted on to Tapestry. This will give you advice and videos of how best to support your child with early reading at home.

In our efforts to be eco-friendly, with the exception of this week, information regarding our week, diary dates and updates will be emailed to parents/carers via the Whole School Weekly News using the email address we hold on our school management system.

If you have specifically requested paper copies of correspondence this will be provided.  Please contact the school office if you wish to change your request.

All correspondence will be posted on the school website www.ovschool.co.uk.  Information specific for Reception will be posted under Parent Information/ Reception.
