Sports Provision at Orchard Vale

Physical Education at Orchard Vale

The Headteacher, PE co-ordinator and school staff are committed to ensure that all pupils receive at least 2 hours of high-quality well-planned PE per week delivered by confident and well-trained teachers.

The successful delivery of the curriculum supports all aspects of health education within the school. Staff training is provided for teachers and lunchtime staff to keep them abreast of new initiatives, ensuring that PE is a high-profile subject during the school day, at lunchtimes and beyond the school day. We also offer a sporting club for each day of the week after school and all children get at least 2 hours a week of excellent PE provision. Sports taught at Orchard Vale are wide and varied, both during the school day, and as extra-curricular clubs. Opportunities after school include a range of sports such as football, basketball, cricket, netball and hockey. These change termly and are offered across both key stages.

During the Summer Term, pupils also actively encouraged to take part in the 'Daily Mile' which is used to increase fitness and improve the pupil's general health and wellbeing. The children also have opportunities to reach a marathon which is celebrated in weekly assemblies.

Our ‘Active@OV’ project within school is an initiative used to offer a wider range of opportunities within the school day for children to be active. This project allows us to offer active breakfast and after-school clubs as well as active break and lunch times. These increased opportunities have been extremely popular - with the children enjoying the chance to be more and more active! The opportunities include ‘Just Dance’, skipping activities, basketball and gymnastics.

Through the local School Sports Coordinator Service Level Agreement that we have purchased as part of the Barnstaple Learning Community, the school takes part in year group sports festivals, intra and inter schools competitions leading to level 2 and 3 “School Games” competitions and central venue sports. In addition to this we work closely within the VENTRUS trust schools communities to develop sporting events. These include rugby tournaments, athletic competitions, football tournaments and cross-country opportunities.
