Year 5 visit to Shebbear College - Science Event

21st April 2017

Year 5 visit to

Science Workshop

Friday 21st April 10.00am - 3.00pm

Purpose of the day:

Biology - breathing and circulation masterclass with heart/lung dissections.

An alternative workshop using models instead of actual organs will also be offered. Dissection completed by teacher and not the students themselves.

The children will be able to:

  •  Describe the changes as humans develop to old age.
  •  Ask pertinent questions and suggest reasons for similarities and differences.
  •  Observe changes in an animal over a period of time.
  •  Identify and name the main parts of the human circulatory system, and describe the functions of the heart, blood vessels and blood

Chemistry - non-Newtonian fluids and slime. Student creating their own ‘slime’ and the science behind it.

The children will be able to:

  • Demonstrate that dissolving, mixing and changes of state are reversible changes.
  • Explain that some changes result in the formation of new materials, and that this kind of change is not usually reversible

Physics - sub-zero liquid Nitrogen, demos and experiments. Exploring the properties of liquid nitrogen.

The children will be able to:

  • Pupils should build a more systematic understanding of materials by exploring and comparing the properties of a broad range of materials.
  • Pupils might work scientifically by: carrying out tests to answer questions.
  • They might research and discuss how chemical changes have an impact on our lives, for example, cooking, and discuss the creative use of new materials
