Exmoor Youth Challenge 2015

This year some of our Orchard Vale Pupils will be participating in the Exmoor Youth challenge!

Our pupils are taking part in training with Mr Magson and Miss Felgate, which involves team work, map reading and practicing walking as this challenge will need a lot of endurance!

The Challenge starts and finishes at Dulverton Middle School, Dulverton, Somerset on Saturday 2nd May 2015.

The route will not be marked and the teams will have to follow written instructions and use basic map-reading and compass skills. The course involves walking over a variety of terrain including open moorland.

Quote from Mr Magson

"An arduous challenge which tested the two teams Orchard vale entered, they conducted the 16 mile walk unaided across the moor.

The teams consisted of 4 people, they have to follow a 16 mile route which is not marked - so following instructions, map-reading, and compass skills are essential.

There are a series of check-points along the route and each leg has to be done in a pre-determined time - points are deducted if teams arrive too early or too late, and those who get very tired and lag too much are pulled out of the challenge. Only those who successfully complete the event are presented with a medal.

Our children completed the challenge in a very professional manner in a great time, they were positioned 8th & 13th out of 143 teams and raised a total of £475.50 for the Children's Hospice Southwest."
